“You get everything you want and then get sick of it, you’re like the kids. You know what that means, right, baby? You don’t actually want anything. You’re just a wandering ball of energy, pure Id. You want tasks and pleasure until you’re done or you tire, and then you want to sleep until you wake up, and then you’re hungry until you eat. Sounds nice.”
Lance smiles. He doesn’t know that he agrees with Vinny’s little psychiatric diagnosis, but he doesn’t argue that he’s a seeker, that he’s always looking for the next gig. Maybe that’s why he isn’t so hot with all this movie business, all the work to prep, all the fallout of putting it together and getting it out into the world long after the life of the performance itself is gone. Lance prefers the real-time communication of being on a stage in front of an audience so he can experience the show-magic and then be done with his work when the magic has run out. He does until he tires of doing? Maybe Vinny is right.
“You’re some kind of serious workaholic then,” he tells Vinny. “That’s that child of immigrants thing, maybe. You’ve got a severe compulsion to seek the American dream, but poor you, you don’t like getting what you want that much either. I remember Steubenville too now, those headlines of Local Boy Makes Good made you feel bad, didn’t they?”
“I don’t like being a credit to that place. I want to be a citizen of the world, or maybe grow up a gypsy type, like you. When nowhere’s home, everywhere’s home, that’s nice for you.”
“True. Wherever I go I am home, home is wherever I can lay my head.” Lance lays his head on Vinny’s chest, to make his point quite literal.
“Wherever you are feels like home to me too,” Vinny says. “That’s why I have an idea. Let’s go on vacation, what do you say? Let’s pick some place continental, you know, the good continent, Europe, and go be at home somewhere brand new to us.”
“You know what?” Lance says as he reaches to turn off the lamp. He’s done talking now, ready to start dreaming, so it’s time to kill the light. “Let’s do that.”
Vinny only brought it up, it turns out, because he’d been planning it all along. Lance agrees he wants to go to the only continent that gets the title of The Continent out of seven, and within a month they’re boarding a flight to Paris. This is something Vinny had always planned for himself, or so he tells Lance during the flight. He says he always told himself as a kid that if he really made he’d go to Paris. When he had enough money, and prospects, and stability with a grand career to take a vacation, he’d book a flight to Paris and have a glass of champagne, the real stuff, from the Champagne region of France, and nothing less than that. He just hadn’t had any idea for most of his life that he’d be booking a trip for two. This is a surprise for them both if you take that into consideration. It’s a marker of a whole new life to come for each of them.
Paris looks pretty cool to Lance, he’s seen chunks of it in so many movies that for the first sight-seeing excursion he feels like he’s on a movie set. But once he walks up and touches the Eiffel Tower and sees just how big it is, once he has some brie baguette bonbons or whatever, and a glass of champagne that Vinny savors way more slowly than the gin back home, it all starts to feel real. Then Lance starts telling Vinny about all the great people who have died in Paris.
“Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison from The Doors, Coco Chanel, the Braille guy, Princess Di, Baudelaire, it’s like where poets, philosophers, and the stylish all come to die.”
“Nice,” Vinny says. “Hey, let’s come back here to die someday, then; what do you say?”
“Deal,” Lance agrees.
They visit the big Père Lachaise Cemetery and some catacombs too. Lots of restaurants where they eat almost no full meals, mostly just chocolates, cheeses, and alcohols. They look at the river, they look at the buildings, they don’t get much sleep even here on what should be their restful vacation—there’s too much to see night and day, and too much fun to have even when they’re back at their hotel in bed. They brought the Ben Wa balls with them in the bag they checked together. They’re considering finding a nice Paris sex shop so they can bring home a very private souvenir of this, the only honeymoon they’re planning to have. They’re gallivants, not honeymooners. They’re clowns, not newlyweds. This is a promise, not a wedding present. This is they place they’ll come back to at the end of their lives, together, just like they’ve said. It’s too good a call-back to miss, Lance knows it. They won’t choose to die anywhere else, and they certainly won’t come back alone as long as they have each other.
“Should we learn any French if we’re going to keep coming back?” Lance asks on the last night of their first trip, on the balcony of their hotel room with their original recipe champagne. Even the alleys and gutters of Paris are historic-seeming and romantic to them, so every window and porch and roof has a view as far as they’re concerned. This one has a view of the street full of flaneures—that’s French for people who wander around the streets.
“Why? Most of them speak English better than half of all Americans, and besides, we’d never pronounce it right, we’d just annoy them.”
“I know a little already,” Lance says. “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?”
Vinny smiles and picks up Lance’s hand to kiss it, like the gentleman he always tries to be. He know what that phrase means too, and answers Lance by singing to him, a little in English, and a little in Italian, some old hit.
“Scuzza me, but you see, back in old Napoli . . . That's amore.”
“Oh, is that what’s it’s called in Napoli? Here c’est l’amore, okay?”
“Live la dolce vita, bambino.”
“Quit singing cheesy songs at me if you want me to live the sweet life.”
“Cheesy? You mean cheesy like-a big-a pizza pie?” Vinny says.
Lance sprays Vinny with champagne laughing at that, gotta love this guy’s timing; the way he never really breaks out laughing or cackling no matter how funny he thinks something is, a born straight man. For all that Lance is, and all that he’s looking for in life, and all that completes him? It’s all wrapped up in Vinny.
Lance decides to move their repartee into Morticia and Gomez territory by saying, “Ma chere, we’re dans le Paris, where the gloom is so refreshing, can’t we just wallow in the decadence?”
“Cara mia! You spoke French, I love it!” Vinny says, cuing into the Gomez role, who always goes wild when he hears his love speaking French.
“Embrasse-moi,” Lance says, more French.
“Is that hug you, hold you, embrace you? Tell me, darling!” Vinny says, setting down his champagne and going dramatically onto one knee.
Lance shakes his head. “Kiss me,” he says, and Vinny rises up to obey him.
They perform for each other all night long.
